TALC
GEMERSKA POLOMA, SLOVAKIA
Talc is an industrial mineral with a wide range of uses. Its demand has a growing tendency in the industry.
So far, all talc bearings in our country have been known only in veporik (near HnúšÅ¥a), where they occur together with magnesites. In gemerik, magnesites are developed to a greater extent than in veporik, however, talc mineralization is only very sporadic. We know only small, today already exhausted bearings at Jelšava: Kohútik and Mazanec. All previous theories on the causes of uneven development and representation of talc mineralization are refuted by the discovery of the Gemerska Poloma deposit.
In 2000, opening works began on one of the most important European talc bearings. The bearing was opened by a 1250-meter drop ramp with a 10% slope and a cross section of 20 m². The Austrian tunnelling method was used for driving: bolts, wire mesh, arches and sprayed concrete. The works were interrupted in 2001. In 2005, a new project was developed to make this deposit accessible by an adit 4250m long, with 9m2 profile and 2 ‰ rising. The opening works lasted 24 months. Later, a 320-meter high chimney was driven to serve as the second escape exit. At present, the deposit is in mining operation and a treatment plant is built.
